Mega Food Parks promote processing facilities in a big way. With the right infrastructure, food processing units will be able to provide a large improvement in the domestic consumption. In order to promote food processing industries, increase level of processing and exploit the potential of domestic and international market for processed food products, Vision Document-2015 was prepared by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

The document envisages trebling the size of investment in the processed food sector by increasing the level of processing of perishables from 6 per cent to 20 per cent, value addition from 20 per cent to 35 per cent and share in global food trade from 1.5 per cent to 3 per cent by 2015. According to the Ministry, an investment of Rs 100,000 crore (US$ 14.67 billion) would be required in 2015 to achieve these targets.

The Government of India has also relaxed foreign direct investment (FDI) norms for the sector, allowing up to 100 per cent FDI in food product e-commerce through automatic route. Indian Food Processing Industry has seen significant growth and changes over the past few years, driven by changing trends in markets, consumer segments and regulations. These trends in the future are expected to shape the demand for value added products in India.

As per the PM, India’s Food Processing Industry is expected to increase almost five-fold in next 10 years. India, having access to a vast pool of natural resources and growing technical knowledge base, has strong comparative advantages over other nations in this industry. The Govt. has been approving proposals for joint ventures, foreign collaboration, industrial licenses and 100% EOUs envisaging an investment of Rs. 19,100 crores (US$ 4.80 billion) during the same period.
