In 2023, the overall growth rate of China’s catering industry was significant. The annual revenue of the catering industry reached 5289 billion yuan, with a growth rate of 20.4%. Among this, the catering income from units above designated size was 1335.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 20.9%. In the total retail sales of social consumer goods, the catering industry led other sectors in growth rate.

In 2020, the market size of China’s catering and food packaging industry was 603.9 billion yuan, a 0.3% increase from 2019. It is expected that by 2023, the market size of China’s catering and food packaging will reach 630 billion yuan.

According to public data, there are currently 2.83148 million catering and food packaging related enterprises in China. Looking at the registration of enterprises, the number of registrations in China’s catering and food packaging industry has increased year by year. Data shows that from 2017 to 2022, the number of enterprise registrations grew from 1.7247 million to 3.9455 million, with an average annual compound growth rate of 18%.

In the past five years, China’s food and packaging machinery industry has developed at an average annual growth rate of 11%-12%; the National Development and Reform Commission has listed food processing and packaging machinery as a key priority area for the development of the food industry. For a considerable period of time in the future, the annual growth rate of China’s food processing and packaging machinery is expected to exceed 12%.

The “Fourteenth Five-Year Development Plan” for China’s Food and Packaging Machinery Industry forecasts that the total output value of enterprises above scale in the food and packaging machinery industry will reach 1500 billion yuan in 2025, with an average annual compound growth rate of about 8%.
