Agri Cambodia 2024: Overview
Agriculture is the backbone of Cambodia’s economy. The sector accounts for 22 percent of the GDP, employs about 3 million people, and has been a source of economic resilience throughout the pandemic, according to agriculture statistics compiled by the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia. Agricultural exports – including rice, cassava, maize, pepper, fresh mango, and raw palm oil – reached 4.2 million tons in 2018. Cambodia’s agriculture exports to the United States are about $220 million per year, with lots of growth potential. Agricultural growth was driven by a combination of increased yields, more productive use of labor due to mechanization, and the expansion of farmland.
In Cambodia, the primary agricultural commodity is rice, which includes high-quality strands. The Phka Rumdoul variety of fragrant rice was awarded the “best rice in the world” award in 2012, 2013, and 2014. In 2019, rice contributed to half of Cambodia’s agricultural GDP, and with 620,000 tons exported in 2019, making the country one of the top 10 rice exporters in the world.
However, the country’s fruits and vegetables can meet only 70% of local demand, and the rest must be imported, especially from Thailand and Vietnam.
Programs including USAID’s Feed the Future Harvest II work to boost commercial production of horticulture products – including mango, cashew nuts, and pepper. Besides, CAST (Commercial Agriculture for Sustainable Trade) is a USDA Food for Progress project designed to develop a lasting aquaculture industry in Cambodia to help meet the growing demand for animal and aquaculture-sourced protein. The country’s aquaculture industry demand for soybean protein is projected to reach 100,000 metric tons per year by 2030.
