Cambodia PHAR-MED Expo 2024: Quick Facts
The Cambodian economy maintained an average growth rate of 7.7 per cent between 1998 and 2019, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world, the global shock triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic significantly impacted Cambodia’s economy in 2020. The economy in 2020 registered negative growth of -3.1 per cent, the sharpest decline in Cambodia’s recent history, while its growth was estimated at 7.1 per cent in 2019. With relaxed travel restrictions and the ‘reopening’ of the country, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have forecast that the Cambodian economy will grow around 4.5 per cent in 2022.
Healthcare In Cambodia:
The Cambodian healthcare market is comprised of a wide variety of providers, including public health facilities, pharmacies, private hospitals, and professional medical service providers. The latter typically operate from their own facilities or travel directly to patients’ homes. Qualified private providers and pharmacies are mostly available in urban areas. Two-thirds of public health staff also work separately in some private capacity. In addition, a number of NGO-run health facilities and charitable hospitals provide services.
As of June 2019, there were 2,803 registered pharmacies, 446 drug import / export companies and branches, and 19 medical manufacturing institutions in Cambodia. Apart from formal healthcare services, informal healthcare providers are common throughout Cambodia: these include vendors selling drugs from shops or markets and traditional birth attendants, as well as traditional healers.
Cambodia’s market for medical device imports is growing, doubling in size between 2015 and 2020 according to health professionals. The establishment of new private hospitals has boosted the demand for quality machinery.
Available data suggest that, between 2008 and 2018, imports of medical instruments grew by about 57%, while imports of medical X-ray machines increased by 162%.
In addition, the government has recently made available funds to purchase medical devices to supply public hospitals. The government’s strategy is to reduce the gap between the public sector and the best private hospitals. To this end, several public tenders have been announced, focusing on in-vitro diagnostic devices and medical imaging devices.
