Agro Expo India 2023: Overview
- Agriculture segment is country’s largest employer of workforce, it accounted for 18.8 per cent of Gross Value Added in the country (2021-22), with a 3.6% growth in 2020-21 and a 3.9% growth in 2021-22.
- Along with agriculture the allied sectors such as animal husbandry, dairying, poultry and fishing continue to grow rapidly as well, with the livestock sector growing at a CAGR of 8.15 per cent over the past five years
- With 23 % of global milk production, India ranks first in milk production. Milk production in the country has reached 209.96 mn tonnes by 2020-21 from 146.31 mn tonnes in 2014-15.
- An infrastructure development fund worth $2.1 billion, with an interest subsidy scheme, was launched by the Indian government in June 2020 for the dairy segment, and is expected to create 3.5 million jobs by encouraging investments in dairy, meat processing and animal feed plants.
- As part of the SMAM scheme, the government organized more than 300 outreach programs in collaboration with state governments to enhance agricultural exports.
- While India is one of the world’s leading producers of several agricultural / food items, less than 10 percent of those items are processed. Therefore the agriculture sector in India presents a huge untapped potential for food processing industry.
Why Jammu & Kashmir?
- A total of 400 thousand hectares of Jammu and Kashmir land was cultivated in the state as of 2020.
- 70%of the population in Jammu and Kashmir is directly or indirectly employed in agricultural and allied occupations
- Horticulture contributes a great deal to the State Economy and is a source of livelihood for 33 million people.
- Due to its geographic positioning the farmers of the state need investments, technology and specialised equipment in order to utilise the untapped potential of the available cultivable land and mountainous slopes which are largely left uncultivated due to lack of equipment and innovative practices.
- The Agro Expo India aims to fill this gap between supply and demand in the state of J&K by bringing onboard suppliers and manufacturers of required technology and machinery in order to enable farmers of the region to increase their operational capabilities.
