The plastprintpack Nigeria 2024 is an international trade fair for plastics, printing and packaging technology and will take place in Lagos, Nigeria at the Landmark Convention Centre. Nigeria’s plastics industry is fast growing
The EUROMAP Plastics Resin Production and Consumption Country Cluster of February 2019 confirms significant growth for Nigeria:
- The per capita consumption of plastics in Nigeria has grown by about 3.6% annually over the past ten years, from 4.0 kg in 2007 to 5.9 kg in 2018 and is estimated to be 6.8 kg in 2022.
- Nigeria’s plastics consumption has grown by 6.5% annually over the past ten years, from 578 kt in 2007 to 1.148 kt in 2017 and is estimated to be 1.478 kt in 2022.
- Nigeria‘s plastics production has grown by 10.3% annually over the past years, from 120 kt in 2007 to 436 kt in 2018 and is estimated to be 523 kt in 2022.
- Nigeria’s plastics consumption by application in 2018: 55% of consumption is accounted for by packaging, 16% by construction, 6% for automotive and the remainder by various industries.
- Nigeria’s plastics consumption by processing method in 2018: In plastics processing, extrusion is in the lead with 51%, followed by injection molding with 23%, blow molding with 8% and PET preform & stretch blow molding with 11%.
Nigeria is Africa’s third largest importer of plastics in primary forms
With 72% of raw materials imported (mainly from the Middle East, Europe and Asia) and only 28% produced locally, the Nigerian market has great potential for exporters of plastics in primary forms.
In the years 2008 to 2017, for example, imports of plastic raw materials increased annually by 5.2% from 464 kt to 729 kt, +57%! This makes Nigeria, after Egypt and Algeria, Africa‘s third largest importer of plastics in primary forms!
